Synopsis

In late-nineteenth-century Rome, wealthy aristocrat Tullio Hermil (Giancarlo Giannini) has grown indifferent to his devoted wife Giuliana (Laura Antonelli) and openly pursues an affair with the sophisticated Countess Teresa Raffo (Jennifer O'Neill). Accustomed to indulging every desire, Tullio expects unquestioning loyalty from everyone around him. But when Giuliana finds emotional fulfillment in a passionate relationship of her own, his carefully maintained world begins to unravel.

Adapted from Gabriele d’Annunzio’s controversial 1892 novel, L’INNOCENTE was the final film completed by legendary director Luchino Visconti. Returning to themes that defined much of his career, Visconti crafts a sumptuous period drama that is both “opulent and languidly erotic” (Time Magazine).
