A woman living in quiet Yanjiao, separated from Beijing by the White River and observing strict quarantine rules, has a simple daily routine consisting of nothing but cooking and cleaning. The mundanity, however, gives was to an erotic entanglement when she begins to sleep with a waiter from the neighborhood, under the watchful eye of her husband. From first-time female director Ma Xue, White River tests the viewers perceptions around voyeurism and female sensuality to surrealistic effect in this playfully mounted erotic drama.

- "Not since In The Realm Of The Senses has a film showcased sensuality in such a delicate yet potent way. White River echoes the taboo-breaking art films of the 1970s and is easily in the same class. In her first feature, Ma strikes a unique tone with a movie as beautiful and fragile as an orchid...."
- "“White River”... succeeds both as an art-house/experimental and an erotic film, with Ma Xue emerging as a filmmaker definitely worth following."
