Synopsis

Jean-Marie Lustiger (Laurent Lucas), the son of Polish-Jewish immigrants, maintains his cultural identity as a Jew even after converting to Catholicism at a young age. Eventually joining the priesthood and rising to be appointed the Archbishop of Paris by Pope Jean Paul II, Lustiger uses his influence to celebrate his dual identity as a Catholic Jew. But when Carmelite nuns plan to build a convent on the grounds of Auschwitz and he is asked to arbitrate the dispute between the two communities, Lustiger is, at last, forced to choose a side.
