Y, an 18-year old high school senior, begins a sado-masochistic affair with J, a 38-year-old sculptor. Y lies to her parents to meet J and lose her virginity to him. Soon, their sexual relationship intensifies with increasing sadistic acts. After a three-month trip to Paris, J reunites with Y, now an adult, and there is nothing to stop the two. They leave everything behind and become sexual vagrants in their own hedonistic world. Presented in a new 4K restoration.

Reviews

  • "Someone has finally done it -- made a sexually explicit feature that is also a genuine and harrowing work of erotic drama."
    Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly
  • "Jang Sun-Woo's deliciously witty film deals with the polarities which underlie all relationships: honesty and dishonesty, trust and distrust, bravery and cowardice. This splendid film confirms him as one of contemporary cinema's most persuasive liars."
    Tony Rayns, Sight & Sound
  • "Sly... witty.... At once perceptive, moving, queasy and comically relentless."
    J. Hoberman, The Village Voice
  • "Astonishing.... Confirms the director as Asian cinema's most provocative talent."
    Time Out
  • "A thoughtful and complex examination of the byways of human emotion and sexuality."
    Arthur Lazere, Culturevulture.net
  • "The beauty of the film, nonetheless, lies outside of the controversy surrounding it – it unveils a layer of Korean society that is supposed to be kept tightly under wraps."
    Mladen Pechevski, Eastern Kicks
